I got 3rd place in a 3 person bracket. It was a double elimination tournament so I lost to both of the other guys.
Both matches ended in submission, first was an Ezekiel choke, second was an armbar.
Basically the same as the previous Lutter Tournament.
I tapped out in half the time of my first IBJJF tournament and I was extremely disappointed at first. However, I watched the rest of the bracket and the guy who beat me was suspiciously good for a no-stripe white belt. The last match (which the same guy won) also looked suspiciously like a wrestling match.
It turns out that he has D-1 wrestling experience, which disqualified him after he won the bracket. So the guy he beat in the final is in the #1 spot on the podium. The guy who I would have originally shared 3rd place with got bumped to 2nd, but didn't show up.
I performed much better from the stand-up, although I kept throwing him the wrong direction for the grips I had. Eventually he ended up on top and I couldn't get out of his side-control long enough to do anything.
About 40 seconds from the end he started to go for a papercutter choke and I decided that I wasn't going to let him do that, and that I would at least run the clock out.
Things to work on for next time:
- Side control escapes
- Half-guard sweeps
- Better understanding of grips (both during stand-up and on the ground)
- Controlling space
- Throw the correct direction
- Time the throw better
