Tournaments

2025/01/26 - IBJJF Dallas Winter

Adult / Male / White / Medium-Heavy

2025/02/15 - Lutter Tournament

I got 3rd place in a 3 person bracket. It was a double elimination tournament so I lost to both of the other guys.

Both matches ended in submission, first was an Ezekiel choke, second was an armbar.

2025/04/13 - IBJJF Houston

Adult / Male / White / Heavy

2025/07/26 - Lutter Tournament

Basically the same as the previous Lutter Tournament.

2025/08/03 - IBJJF Dallas Summer

Adult / Male / White / Heavy
What a clusterfuck of a bracket

I tapped out in half the time of my first IBJJF tournament and I was extremely disappointed at first. However, I watched the rest of the bracket and the guy who beat me was suspiciously good for a no-stripe white belt. The last match (which the same guy won) also looked suspiciously like a wrestling match.

It turns out that he has D-1 wrestling experience, which disqualified him after he won the bracket. So the guy he beat in the final is in the #1 spot on the podium. The guy who I would have originally shared 3rd place with got bumped to 2nd, but didn't show up.

2025/12/07 - IBJJF Waco

Adult / Male / White / Heavy
"Mission failed, we'll get 'em next time"

I performed much better from the stand-up, although I kept throwing him the wrong direction for the grips I had. Eventually he ended up on top and I couldn't get out of his side-control long enough to do anything.

About 40 seconds from the end he started to go for a papercutter choke and I decided that I wasn't going to let him do that, and that I would at least run the clock out.

Things to work on for next time:

- Side control escapes
- Half-guard sweeps
- Better understanding of grips (both during stand-up and on the ground)
- Controlling space
- Throw the correct direction
- Time the throw better

2026/02/20 - IBJJF Austin

Adult / Male / White / Medium-Heavy

I cut down from Heavy to Medium-Heavy after Waco. Ended up fighting a guy from Travis Lutter, the school that my Coach went to. Dude was tall. I tried to dummy sweep him without regard for that fact and ended up way behind. I feel like this is still my best performance but it was also my worst matchup (short of the D-1 guy). The plan for Dallas is to make it down to Middle weight, and to work on better grips.

2026/03/07 - Lutter Tournament

Three-man bracket. Lost my first match to an armbar. Won my second with a head and arm choke. Lost to the first guy again to another armbar.

Felt good to get my first competitive win.

2026/03/15 - IBJJF Dallas Winter

Adult / Male / White / Medium-Heavy

I had been sick for the week leading up to this tournament so I didn't get any training in. I'm pretty happy with how I performed with that in mind, but still ultimately disappointed.

Going to cut down to Middle at least for the next one.

2026/04/12 - IBJJF Houston

Adult / Male / White / Middle

I got my first IBJJF win! Unfortunately the first minute was not caught on camera, but I went with my gameplan of pushing into him and trying for a sacrifice throw, and ended up in a crappy guard pull. I swept him over with a really sloppy scissor sweep, and maintained top-side control long enough to bring the score to 2-0, and then the video picks up

In the second match, the guy told me after the fact that he almost blacked out from my loop choke attempt. I will need to ask about how to better keep hold of that grip.

2026/04/25 - JJWL Texas VIII

Adult / Male / White / Middle
"I am not amused"

Five matches in one day. My longest tournament day yet, and man was I tired after. First time competing in No-Gi as well which was quite interesting.

2026/05/10 - IBJJF San Antonio

Adult / Male / White / Middle
Me and 3rd place saw eye to eye

Two submissions! Solid improvement over my last IBJJF outing. The guy who got Gold told me it was his third one so I can't be too disappointed that I lost the final. And hey Silver is pretty cool too!
